SOLUTION: refresh rate

The first step was to find out what kind of the FB the machine had.
In my case it was Elite 3D, which Sun internally calls AFB;
I learned this bit of information by looking at the following URL:

the above is a printout of the `fbinfo` script. There is a detail in there
about how Sun calls Elite 3D, which is "AFB".

This piece of information was verified by looking at the /dev/fb0 link.
Next I looked in /usr/sbin and located /usr/sbin/afbconfig.
I then looked at the man page and made a printout of all the supported

After this, I gave the following command:

/usr/sbin/afbconfig -dev /dev/fb0 -res 1280x1024x60

and answered "yes" at the prompt, and then restarted X.
