Orig post:
what's the best way to measure the throughput of a particular network
interface?
i'm looking for information (white paper/s, best practices, etc) on design &
configuration issues when implementing & supporting a large-scale web
application.
we're in the process of replacing a legacy/mainframe ES (employment
services) system with a client server web-based system.

my main interest at this point is optimizing a web server:
System Configuration: Sun Microsystems sun4u Sun Enterprise 450 (4 X
UltraSPARC-II 400MHz)
System clock frequency: 100 MHz
Memory size: 2048 Megabytes
4 9GB drives (diskpak) on single controller
HTTPD SW: Apache/1.3.12 (Unix)

I've read in the past from various sources/articles some suggestions for
tuning; but I don't have all that info saved & I'm interested in collecting
addit'l info to be able to competently put these best practices into place.
having problems pulling apache's site up--is there an apache list?

replies--
netstat -i is a good tool. ntop is also a good tool.
