 Martin suggested to flash upgrade the prom. I did not try
 that. Instead (as suggested by Mike) I've returned the
 computer to my vendor for replacement. All the unstableness
 (weird banner messages/hangs/crashes) indicates a
 hardware related problem.
 I will re-summarize if I have more info for you......
