My question intended to help me decide whether powering down nightly
a lab-full of SPARCstation-4's is a good idea or not, especially taking
into account the risk of fire against the expected increase in failures.
I understood that generally powering off is not healthy for the hardware.
Most responders advised me that both Solaris 2.5.1 and SPARCSstation-4
have power management capabilities, which I am aware of and already using.
A few people also provided their experiences with running similar labs
and most of those voted for leaving the machines running, though some
pointed out the advantages of powering down once a day (save energy,
reduce risk of fire, constrain network security compromise).

Hi,
What is the common wisdom regarding powering down a pool of workstations
for the night? I have 12 Sparcstation 4's in a laboratory, and they are
used for a couple of hours during the day, Monday through Friday.
I have decided to shut them down every night, mainly because of the heat
they generate and the possibility of fire (there is no sprinkler or fire
detection system whatsoever).
As it happens, the people in charge of the room sometimes forget to power
them down, and, while I know I should strongly consider installing
an effective fire protection system, I am wondering if I should press
harder for having them powered down, or rather expect to see an increased
failure incidence due to powering the computers up and down each day?
And how about weekends?
I hope someone having experience operating a laboratory like mine
can share their experience.
