thanks to the following for making good suggestions, though nothing worked:

Michael Arndt [M.Arndt@science-computing.de]
Sid_Shapiro@bio-rad.com
mike.salehi@kodak.com

in the end, I added a firewall rule specifically for my host. I did not
have to do this for any of the other hosts that brazil could get to but
after two days, I don't have the cycles to keep messing with this.

Subject: rsh and something obvious

k, this has got to be an easy one and I've been stumped two days on it. 2
machines, brazil and envy. envy has a /.rhosts set to +. when I do an rsh
envy, from brazil, I get logged in, as root. when I do a rsh envy who, the
command hangs, and eventually, I get a command line back with no error, just
nothing at all. both are running 2.6. brazil can rsh to other machines on
the same network that envy is on without a problem and envy is the stock
install with nothing, outside of getting the machine on the network,
changed.

help!

thanks
