I asked (see below) about compatibility of Solaris 2.6 5/98 with the E4500.

The problem here is the 8MB cache on the system. You need to get kernel patch 105181-20 (or higher) installed to use it properly. To get booted from CD to install the OS, you need to tell the Open Boot Prom to limit its cache size; at the ok prompt, enter:

ok limit-ecache-size
ok setenv auto-boot? false

Now you can boot from CD and install 2.6. Be sure to tell suninstall *not* to auto-reboot after the install completes. Shut the system down, enter "reset" at the ok prompt, and re-enter the limit-ecache-size command as above (it does not carry over between resets). Now boot the system again.

Retrieve and install the Recommended patch set from ftp://sunsolve.sun.com/pub/patches

Now the system will boot normally, with the limit-ecache-size command being entered at the ok prompt. (You can also re-set auto-boot? back to true.)

This procedure is laid out in detail in SunSolve doc #20149

Is the 5/98 Release of Solaris 2.6 supported on E4500's, or do I have a hardware problem?

Solaris 7 boots ok, but 2.6 doesn't
