Thanks to everyone but andy Holmes presented the solution in the most formal
format so to quote him here are the steps to upgrading a sun box:
1. Back up all data first ;-)
2. init 0 to boot prom
3. boot cdrom
4. follow normal path and select new installation
5. edit filesystems when requested.
