sorry for all that waste of bandwidth,
i was missing that there is nothing like mail.* which can be there in
/etc/syslog.conf
I changed that line by
mail.info /var/log/syslog
and now there are entries in /var/log/syslog
now I will try finding the problem of not able to send mail with
attachements to perticular users.
any help regarding that will be appreciated.
ThanX to all and specifically to Scott Balfour, who told me to have a look
at "man syslog.conf " once again.

Prashant
