Most embarrassingly, it turned out that the cable was not connected

My original query was:

> I have a Solaris 2.4 machine with a postscript printer on the parallel
> port (/dev/bpp0). This has worked fine for several weeks but now its
> stopped working. When a job is sent to the printer, it sits on the
> queue. Doing an lpq reports:
> Warning: edc is down: Failed to open the printer port. (Device busy)
> (the printer is called "edc")
> If the job is removed the message goes away after a couple of
> minutes.
> To try to fix this I did a series of lpshut's, and killed all
> processes which fuser revealed to be using /dev/bpp0. However the
> problem was still present after subsequent lpsched's. In desperation
> I rebooted, hoping that there was an internal error which would go
> away but after the reboot the situation was still the same. I have
> also power-cycled the printer to no avail.
> Has anyone come across this behaviour and if so was there a solution?
> I shall summarise of course.
> Many thanks for any help.
