Summary: Triple Headed Ultra30

My original question (attached below) dealt with using a PGX card
to get triple heads on an Ultra30 (with 2 creator cards). I was
getting some verticle lines on the screen at certain times.

It turns out that there is a firmware/hardware bug with these
PGX cards that causes this on the screen if the color map changes
part way through a vertical refresh. Apparently there are currently
no fixes (it is unfixable in software) and Sun does not intend to
fix it as their new 24 bit PCI card will be released soon, and does
not exhibit the same problem.

It looks like I will be waiting for the new card to arrive!

Thanks to those who replied (included below).
Steve Turgeon suggested patch 103792-15 (2.5.1) or 105362-13 (2.6).
I should have mentioned that the system had the latest patches
applied.

Grant Beattie suggested looking at the frame buffer FAQ, which has
alot of interesting information about many of the older graphics cards,
but unfortunately doesn't say much about PGX.

You need patch 103792-15 for 2.5.1 or 105362-13 for 2.6. Steve

Check out http://www.sunhelp.com/. There is a frame-buffer FAQ there.
>From memory, I don't know if > 2 frame buffers are supported in the
Ultra 30.

======The original question:=====

Sun gurus,

I have a requirement for a triple headed Ultra30 system.
I can easily get two heads by filling each of the two
creator slots with a graphics card - no problem there.
The problem comes when I try putting a Sun PGX card
in one of the PCI slots to get the third head. It
doesn't work properly. I get verticle lines on the
third head which indicates to me that the card is
not being initialised properly.

Can anyone make any suggestions here? I have looked
through the Sun web site and can't find anything
that indicates which PCI graphics cards are supported
by the Ultra 30.

Other details:

OS is Solaris 2.6 with recommended patches
OPB revision is 3.9

Thanks in advance and I will summarise,
Ross
