just a guess. if you're using NT ws4.0 and have service patche three
installed, make sure that you have gone into the registry and re-enabled
plain text passwords. this is from the syntax tech support stuff (they
sell an smb server which seem to be pretty close to samba):

1. Run Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE).
2. From the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following key:
\system\currentcontrolset\services\rdr\parameters
3. In the Edit menu, select Add Value.
4. Add the following:
Value Name: EnablePlainTextPassword
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 1
5. Click on OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.
7. Shut down and restart Windows NT.

PROBLEM:

I have installed Samba 1.9.18 on a Sunos 5.6 ( same problem occurs with
5.5.1 ) station. I just want to use Samba to export Unix fs to Microsoft NT
stations. In smb.conf, my entries for the shared fs are:

[ smb_public ]
path = /local/public
writable = yes
public = yes

[ smb_private ]
path = /local/private
writable = yes
valid users = user1 user2

Security is set as "user" ( looks like clever ).
When I try to map the "public" drive, it works fine ( nobody login ), but
when I try to map the "private" drive as user "user1 or user2" the NT box
says "User is not authorized to connect from this station".
These users have been added to smbpasswd file with the "smbpasswd -a"
command and have same names under NIS and Samba.
