Don Bodle nailed the problem for me when he suggested "truss man man",
though Tim Carlson also pointed me in the right direction.
"joe" didn't have read priveleges to the immediate parent of his home
directory (e.g. "~/..). So he could log on just fine, but things got
wierd thereafter ...
It was not a mount point issue (which is covered in the archives, and was
mentioned by a couple of respondents, and which threw me off for a bit).
