Problem solved - once again the list works.

I received only two replies but that was good enough:

Yup, thats the culprit alright.

Apply 103556-34. You should anyway, because it has another security
fix. It also fixes the bug they introduced somewhere in the high
-20s.

You can also fix the problem by creating a symlink on boot pointing

/tmp/.X11-unix -> /var/X/.X11-unix
/tmp/.X11-pipe -> /var/X/.X11-pipe

but as I say with rev -34 it doesn't appear to be necessary anymore.
This patch is one of Sun's larger blunders of late, IMHO.

Create directory /var/X. This replaces the old /tmp/.X11 directory.

Strange things here:

Until patchrev 103566-26, the files /tmp/.X11-unix and
/tmp/.X11-pipe were used. Then suddenly, in rev -27 which
is distributed on the SunSolve CD, these files are moved
to /var/X which does not seem to be documented anywhere,
and makes diskless clients unable to start X.
Then from patchrev. -34 things are back to normal,
the /tmp files are used again !

The workaround suggested (links from /tmp to /var/X) worked
partially, we were able to start openwin, but not the xdm login.

We downloaded 103566-35 and everything works fine.

The following line is found in the README.103566-35 file:
4115576 Patch 103566-27 makes autoclient unable to start X.

Thanks !

Subject: X problem

Hello gurus

After applying recommended patches from the
SunSolve CD version 3.0.10 (June 98),
it is impossible to start anything X11-related
(xdm, xinit, openwindows ...) on diskless clients.

Platform: Solaris 2.5.1
Suspected patch: 103566-27 Xsun patch.
(Installed all recommended patches from the CD)

Symptoms:
Everything seems to work fine locally on the
server and also on X-terminals booting from this server,
but attempts to start anything X-related gives
the following type of response on diskless clients:

------------------
Binding Unix socket: No such file or directory
Fatal server error: Cannot establich unix listening socket
error (pid 223): server unexpectedly died
error (pid 223): Server for display :0 cannot be started,
session disabled.
--------------
Binding Unix socket: No such file or directory
Fatal server error: Cannot establich unix listening socket
/usr/openwin/bin/xinit: Server error.
--------------
Binding Unix socket: No such file or directory
Fatal server error: Cannot establich unix listening socket.
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2):
Unable to connect to X server.
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
-------------------------------

We have tried going back to the previous patch version 103566-25,
but this did not solve the problem, so it may be caused
by another patch.

Any suggestions or solutions are most welcome.

Regards,
Oddvar
