The general consensus is to use the man pages, which I did. However the
man pages does not give much details as to what caused non-zero exit
status. Anything other than a zero(0) is a failure. I had an exit status
of 2 which does is a bit terse. Anyway I change the tape reran the tar
and it was successful. It may have been a device glitch or a bad tape.
