SUMMARY: inetd dies and telnet port blocked

Thanks a million to Chris who came up with the solution. I finally got to
test this theory this afternoon on a machine local to where I work -
wasn't game to do it on a remote one and most of our problems have been on
remote ones up till now.

Up till now we have had to reboot the machine. This fixes the problem
nicely. You also need to restart inetd at some stage.
You use le0 or hme0 - see /etc/hostname.* to find out which interface is
specific to your machine.
