Original Question :
On Sparc 1000's I have heard the rule of thumb is swap space should be
double physical memory up to 256 meg. Not that this can't be exceeded
but I have heard that you will start to see degradation above that.
Does this hold true for the Ultra platform. Both platforms under
Solaris 2.5.1. Or is this fiction and no size limitations need be
considered to keep from degrading performance.
The Sparc 1000 rule of thumb mainly pertains to BSD systems and then not
necassarily. No respone mentioned or showed inclination of a limitation
on either style machine or architecture. Mainly the only limitation for
swap space being twice that of physical memory or large enough to hold a
core dump in case of a panic, if you want to collect one. The
calculations and needs of swap are dependent on what applications you
are running on your system and what memory requirements they demand.
This is as I expected, but mainly the fact that a larger swap area does
not degrade system performance.
