SUMMARY: ROOT PASSWORD!

MY ORIGINAL QUESTION:

Hello!

We have a SPARC10 and a SPARC Classic running Solaris 2.5.1. We changed the
root passwords on the servers last week, but, for some reason none of the
root passwords work anymore. Other users passwords work fine.

I tried booting it off the INSTALL CD-ROM, exited the installation program,
did a passwd command to try to change the password. It gave the following
error:

passwd (files/table) is busy. Try again later

I tried restoring an old shadow file. But, no success.

Any suggestions or solutions? How would I change the password for root?

THANKS FOR ALL THE QUICK RESPONSES. I tried this one and worked fine:

Hi singh:
Try following
1- reboot the system using "boot cdrom -sw"
2- mount -F ufs /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /a
3- cd /a
4- cd etc (makesure you are in /a/etc)
5- vi passwd (remove x from root)
      root:x:0:1:Super-User:/:/sbin/sh
6- vi shadow (remove 56TK3... from root)
      root:56TK34e4Rs:9771::::::
7- reboot the system

Thanks
