Answer: Sybase requires at least as much swap as real memory
Adding sufficient swap space solved the problem.

Thanks to everyone who said to check the shared memory settings
in /etc/system - they were fine. Sybase support actually came through
with the swap answer.

Cheers!

Original post:

While upgrading a Sybase 11.0.1 installation from a Sparc20 to an Ultra 2 (both running Solaris 2.5.1 with 512Megs memory), we ran into a problem on the Ultra 2. Both machines have 2 CPUs.

Although the machines have the same amount of memory, Sybase fails to start on the Ultra 2 with what appears to be an insufficient memory error 10 - or if it does startup it takes up all the memory and hangs the machine.

The Sparc 20 server had a Sybase total memory setting of 180000. The Ultra 2 server fails to start with total memory set > 120000. It does run fine with total memory = 100000. (My DBA says the unit is 2k pages)

I'm beginning to suspect this is a Sybase bug related to the Ultra (and memory capacity being doubled from the SS20 to the Ultra2)

Has anyone encountered this problem, and if so, what was the resolution?
