hi

my original question was:

> under solaris 2.5, a user reported the following error:
>
> %cp: cannot clear S_ISUID and S_ISGID bits in sim.inc: Not owner
>
> the user was not the owner of the file, but had group read/write
> permissions.

the solution was to apply patch 103162-01. sun gives the following bug
description:

> Problem Description:
>1231531 cp -ip deletes source files when file ownership is different

i found that the bug also occurs with just cp -p.

i apologize for not checking out bug reports prior to posting on this
list. it just didn't occur to me - or to the other sys admin here, that
cp would have a bug in it. :( i assumed the user had done something more
esoteric.

my thanks to the following people for their help:
Tim Carlson <tim@santafe.edu>
John W. Funk <jwf@ccuc.on.ca>
Juan Nicolas Ruiz N. <nicolas@ciens.ula.ve>
Jochen Bern <bern@TI.Uni-Trier.DE>
