SUMMARY: disk errors, ld.so not found

The solution turned out to be quite a work-around, but it seemed to
be the only way for us to get this to work in our environment:

[Original message is included at the end of the message.]

1) Used a spare drive (that we just happened to have laying around
with an older version of our installation) to boot up the machine.
2) Run fsck to clean up the device going bad (Quantum...).
3) Mount bad partitions.
4) Bring up the backup tape device, pull off all missing files
(there were quite a few, probably 25 or so).
5) Reboot!

The following are reasons some simpler solutions did not work:

1) Attempted booting from cdrom. Worked okay until I tried to
create the mini-root. Many, many error messages about disk.
   Never came up.
2) Tried by-passing the mini-root installation. There was nothing
on the cdrom that I could use to get their copy of the ld.so
   to my bad disk.
3) The machine that crashed *is* the backup machine, so I could not
move the backup device to another machine (no spare machines).

Thanks to all those who submitted suggestions and clues:

We just had a major power outage and lost a disk on one of our machines
(SPARCstation 2, SunOS 4.1.4). It actually boots single-user, but most
everything (anything that is dynamically linked) gives the error "ld.so:
ld.so.1 not found" when we try to run it. We do not have a spare machine
to bring down to put the bad machine's drive in to attempt to fix it.

My boss suggests setting up a net boot configuration on another machine
(SPARCstation 5, SunOS 5.5.1) and use it to boot the bad machine. I
have the SunOS 4.1.4 CD-ROM, but do not know how to create a net-bootable
partition for the crashed machine. Can I just copy over a bunch of files
on to the new machine, export the partitions, and get it to work by typing
'boot net' on the crashed machine?

What am I forgetting? I know that I will probably have to run bootp or
something like that. It has been a long time since I have run a diskless
machine.
