With apologies for taking so long to get to this problem, I have
finally fixed it. Many thanks to the following people for coming
up with suggestions:

My original problem was that my CDE 1.0.1 Application Manager
would core dump in a broken pipe (in PipeRead) when I clicked on
DeskTop_Tools.
One person suggested that the problem was patch 103186, which
was bad. Others suggested the same thing but using different
patch numbers.
As it happens, the April SunSolve CD landed on my desk this
morning. I applied the latest patches to my Sparc and everything
works properly now. Some of the patches I applied are 103186-23
(a newer version of the Motif patch)and 103093-08 (kernel patch).
I think that the first one is the one that solves the problem.
