SOLUTION: (courtesy of Michael Sullivan)
Running the followin (as root) fixed the problem:
> Running CDE on a solaris 2.5.1 machine and viewing a postscript
> file with image-viewer; I get the following error when I try
> to print the file:
> Print Service has not been configured for the system, contact
> your System Administrator.
> lpstat shows all of the printers and I can print to them from
> the command line, netscape, and other apps.
> I have another machine that has the same printers configured
> and it works fine.
> Machine that works: sparc5 / solaris2.5
> Machine that fails: ultra1 / solaris2.5.1
