The answer had two parts

1) Upgrade the vendor software I was using. The old level was not supported on
Solaris 2.5.1. Then use pkgask again.

pkgask ran with the later version of the software, but still did not produce
a response file. I created one manually that worked just fine withthe new

2) Alter the /var/sadm/install/admin/default (actually use a new one) to
override the questions that pkgadd itself will ask about setuid and running
scripts as superuser. This pointer came from the software vendor.

For those who are curious the package was Legato's Networker Client for Solaris,
version 4.2.5.
