Thanks to everyone who responded so quickly.

My original post was:

My SPARC 20 has a single serial port on the back which I currently have connected to a modem. My understanding is that you can purchase a splitter cable for this port so that you can access both ttya and ttyb.

1. Does this mean that I can access both ports simultaneously and independently?

2. What is the Sun part number for this splitter?

3. Are there alternate sources?

=============================================================================
Response summary:

1. Answer is Yes.

2. Sun part from Sun Express Catalog: 530-1869/c, also X985A.

3. Alternate sources: See detailed messages below.
Special thanks to Troy Wollenslegel <troy@kira.intranet.org> who sent
me the pin outs for the port so that I could build my own cable.

Mine does not have any part numbers on it., It is called the Y-cable. or
A/B cable

You can probaby make one yourself if you really want.. if you want I can
send you the pin out specs from our Sparcstation 10 Installation Guide
if you don't have it.

Peter,

I have just finished installing the splitter cable to my Sparc20 and it works very well. I have ttya connected to a modem, and ttyb connected to an UPS so it can perform an automatic shutdown when the power is down.

You can purchase this cable at Sun Express (800)873-7869 The part number : 530-1869/H5 Cost: $50.00 Description: DB-25(M) to 2 x DB25(F), Serial Port Spitter cable (SS5, SS10, SS20)

I don't have the Sun part number handy because we have never purchased an actual Sun cable for this. The pinouts for the serial port are in the back of one of the manuals. We make all of our own splitter cables using this info.

most sparc 20's come with this cable. you can build or have one built - I will look through my notes and see if I have the pin-outs - they would be on paper so it will take a while to look through all the folders and piles. will email again as soon as..

I got a serial port splitter last year for a Sparc 20. It does indeed let you run two devices simultaneously (we run two digitizers off it.) There's basically no installation. Just plug the cable in and off you go. It was $50 from Sun Xpress, part # X985A. Their number is 1-800-873-7869. The $50 might have been with an educational discount, I'm not sure.

Take care! --Dan Elswit
