The solution to my problem was to remove any empty lines in the master
services file. 
Others suggestions were
- to check that the services was in the maps. (They were).
- NIS isn't binding and responding fast enough.  
  -- Put a couple of "ypwhich" commands in rc.local to jumpstart NIS
     before lpd is launched in /etc/rc.
  -- add a sleep period after ypbind to ensure that binding has the
     time to complete.
