I neglected to mention that this machine is connected via its AUI
interface. On SS5s that we have installed Solaris 2.5 on before, it
always put the line

        cable-selection="aui"

in /kernel/drv/options.conf.

This particular machine didn't have that line (we installed it on TPE and
then moved the machine). I think inserting the line fixed the problem.

How vigilant we are! determined not to live by faith if we can
avoid it; all the day long on the alert, at night we unwillingly
say our prayers and commit ourselves to uncertainties.
