Thanks to all those that replied (far too many to mention):-

C Workshop 2.0 on Solaris 2.5 is ANSI compliant, but it has to be
bought. The old cc shipped with SunOS 4 was not. A lot of people are
using gcc because it's free, and they don't agree with Sun's lead in
dropping cc from the O/S.

Basically change the "sun" that follows the -T option in the /etc/inittab
file.
