The solution was to install the latest version of DNS 4.9.3.
Our DNS problems have cleared up and the proxy server is stable
again.

Subject: Intermittent access root DNS servers
I've got a Sparc 2 running Solaris 2.5 as a proxy server.
This worked fine for the last several months without a hitch.
But within the last 2 weeks, every other day or so, in.named
can't get to the root servers and therefore we can't lookup
anything outside of our domain. Internal lookups continue to
work correctly. When the failure occurs I can still ping
internet addresses so my routes are not the problem.
The problems all started when we rolled out Web browsers
to several users and increased the number of lookups that
are performed daily.
A kill -HUP named.pid doesn't fix the problem. The only
way to get DNS working again is to kill in.named and restart
it. I've looked at everything I can think of but I have not
been able to find the cause. There have been no bugs reported
to Sun regarding DNS and Solaris 2.5 that I could find.
Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?
I've got 64MB of memory and 90MB of swap, does adding
more swap make that much difference to DNS?
Any ideas would be helpful.
