I picked up what I asked for from
        ftp://www.nwi.fws.gov/software/gzip/gzip4dos.exe
        ftp://www.nwi.fws.gov/software/tar/tar4dos.exe
per the suggestion of Tim Fritz.

I took a look at http://oak.oakland.edu/simtel.net, suggested by David
Dezern, and found it to be a strong resource.

Several messages referenced zip for SPARC. This will probably become my
solution, the executables for zip and unzip having been provided by a
vendor (Systems Development Corp, Chicago) compiled from source.
