This list is available by e-mail from x86hcl@sun.com, over the web
(somewhere below http://access1.sun.com) or by automated fax back
1-800-sunsoft prompts 4, 1, 2, 1 (in north america).

SUMMARY: I got 3 kinds of responses.

1. Some folks suggested vendors. A couple listed EIS another mentioned
a system put together by Dell (see the last entry in 3. below).

EIS Computers is a small OEM in SoCal who specializes exclusively in
Solaris for x86. EIS Computers guarantees Solaris compatibility.
The number to call is (800) 351-4608, and the email address is
info@eis.com.

2. A report about a year old on `searching for a solaris workstation',
roughly 100KB of tbl | troff -ms source from
<validgh!validgh.com!dgh@uunet.uu.net>. The hardware list has grown
since the time of this report, but it compares sparcs to pcs and
experiences with various approaches to obtaining a solaris pc. It
makes me inclined to get a solaris pre-installed system, but then
I am not that adventurous.

3. Some folks listed particular components:
<eddy@applicom.co.il>
I suggest you use brand name configuration. Take a look at the Solaris hardware
compatability table and buy EXACTLY what is supported otherwise you are asking
for a lot of heartache and headache.

<oyang@mars.fcit.monash.edu.au>
Get the ASUS Dual pentium-100 motherboard. It's supported and it flies.

<Greg.Elkinbard@Ebay.Sun.COM>
Everex StepDP 100 with PCI Adaptec and PCI Mach 64.

wnelson@Eng.Sun.COM (Will Nelson)
The winner hands down in x86-land in our lab is the
Digital DECpc XL 590.

schmidtc@adsnet.net (Chris Schmidt)
Well, I'm running mine on a Dell OptiPlex XM 590 (16 megs, 2 1 GB SCSI
internal SCSIs, CD, etc). I've got great support from them, both for
the PC and for Solaris.
