About a week ago I proposed this question to sun managers:

The general consensus of answers is that wu-ftpd is generally an all
around better ftp daemon than the stock sun ftpd.

wu-ftpd allows the administrator to limit the number of users, which users
can access the server, what times users and certain users are allowed to
access the server and performs advanced logging. This is true for both
anonymous and non-anonymous configurations.
