This problem occured while I was doing some consulting work in another
city on a relatively new SPARC 10. This machine had been used by
another group before I got to it. The responses I received from this
wonderful group, see below, led me to some areas to check on. For
example:

...
Try:
/dev/ptmx
/dev/console
...
this is because /lib/pt_chmod has lost its setuid bit. It should be
--s--x--x root bin.
...
The mode of /usr/lib/pt_chmod should be 4111.
Also check that /usr is mounted w/o nosuid

I also got through to Sun Technical Support in California, who
suggested other things to check on.

It turns out that the permissions on these files and devices WERE
wrong. After further checking, I found lots of permission problems,
and lots of missing or extra files in the OS areas.

This lead me to believe that that system was not treated very well in
its previous life :-) I was under a lot of time pressure as I was only
in town for 5 days. So, I bit the bullet and rebuilt the OS from the
CD-ROM. I then applied the "Recommended Patch Cluster" (apparently,
these had been applied before but I got my own fresh copy) and the
OpenWindows "mknod permission denied" patch.

This cured the problems, and the system has be usable and stable ever
since.

Thanks to all who replied so quickly. It was very important during
this brief trip to get such fast, informative replies.

Here are the full responses that supplied valuable information:

We had the same problem until we install the 2.3Recommended patch cluster.

According to a friend of mine (Mathew Lodge, <lodge@ferndown.at.slb.com>),
this is because /lib/pt_chmod has lost its setuid bit. It should be
--s--x--x root bin.

We run 4.1.1 and I once (stupidly) followed the instructions in /etc/fbtab and /etc/svdtab and the matching man pages.

Our Sparc 2s then behaved awkwardly with console permissions but not exactly like yours as I remember....

I returned the files to the original state, chmod'ded some devices rebooted,..... all no good. A full restore of the / FS fixed it. I am still mystified, but it worked.
