The correct answer is:

2^31 (just over 2Gb) is the maximum number of bytes in a filesystem under 4.x.
In Solaris 2.x this has been increased to 2^63 (way over a terabyte).

Sun's Online Disksuite product was frequently mentioned as a way to overcome
this limit.
