SUMMARY: How to write Sun TAR files from a Mac

From: David Lawrence Oppenheimer (davido@Princeton.EDU)
Date: Sun Jul 31 1994 - 07:43:16 CDT

My apologies for taking so long to summarize.

A couple of weeks ago I asked if anyone knew of a product which would
write Sun TAR-format files from a Mac. Here is a summary of the responses
I received:

There is a "tar" program on Mac archives. I'm not sure where I got my
copy.

There is a program called Suntar. It reads and writes tar format floppies
from a mac. Look for it in usual places - wuarchive, info-mac etc. If you
can not find it - I can help you find it.

Get SunTar 2.x from info-mac archives. My favorite mirror is
ftp.hawaii.edu, because it's rarely busy and offers decent transfer
rates. It was just released, so look in

Hello David,

There is a bit of shareware call suntar1.3.1 that seems to be
what you are after. Note that it writes tar/bar floppies rather
        than tapes

I've been able to read, unarchive and archive tar files made on a Sun with
a program called SunTar, available at mac.archive.umich.edu. Works fine,
it's free; the only problem I can think of is translation of tarfiles you
make on the Mac onto the Unix (since they have a resource fork, then), but
this probably works fine too!

On the software side, StuffIt Deluxe from Aladdin Systems (on the Internet at aladdin@well.sf.ca.us) includes a 'tar' translator which reads and writes UNIX format 'tar' files. I use this to archive stuff that I produce on the Mac and then upload to a UNIX box (running BSD 4.3? I can't remember ...), where the standard UNIX 'tar' seems to have no problems unarchiving them. There's also a shareware program called something like Suntar available from most of the main FTP sites which, I believe, does something similar - e.g. read/write 'tar' formats - but I haven't tested that. Usual disclaimers apply - I have no connection with these people, your mileage may vary ... but this is a good place to start looking.

Both of these should create the files in the appropriate format. You'll then need something to write them onto the tape, but I presume that will come with the drivers for whatever hardware you buy. I don't know what you'd need on the hardware side to get stuff out to tape, but I'm sure you can find that out.

Hope this helps

Get SunTar v2.0b12 - should be on mac.archive.umich.edu:mac/util/compression (or maybe util/diskfile)

This will do what you want, and supports writing to MFM formatted floppies (i.e. HD's) or any SCSI device (i.e. a tape streamer)

There's a freeware utility to write tar-format files and tapes on the Mac. It's called (not surprisingly) tar, and can be found at any of the info-mac mirror archives. For example, at the UIUC one:

ftp://mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu//pub/info-mac/cmp/tar-40b.hqx.

I've only used it for extracting files on the Mac from tar archive files that I've downloaded from Unix machines, so I can't vouch for its ability to write to tapes. It claims to be able to do so, though the doc says:

Tar has only been tested with a 150 MB Teac streaming cassette drive and Exabyte 8200 and 8500 drives.

I'm using a public domain tar to transfer files from a Sun workstation to a Mac. Its not a complete implementation of tar and the author is no longer supporting the program. However, it works for me.

It's on one of the archive sites, I can look it up if you like.

Either MacTar (it could just be called "Tar") will process the transferred tar-files, or SunTar will actually read the discs created by the Sparcstation (if it has a floppy drive) onto your Mac.

There is a Mac program called "suntar" which will do this. I don't remember where to get it though. I suggest using archie to locate it.

Another option is to install mtools on the Sun, and write PC format disks on the Sun, then read them with apple file exchange, provided the Mac has a 1.44 MB disk.

Suntar (Speranza's un-tar) is freeware. I believe it is at version 1.3.2. This is from the documentation: "Furthermore, with one exception the ancient UNIX hasn't learned yet about floppy disk drives: they must be set up to emulate a tape drive unit, handled by the tar utility. ... So, we wrote suntar, a program which runs on a Macintosh and reads and writes a disk in the physical IBM formats containing data in the logical tar format..."
