Thanks to all that responded. There were two problems of which I will
describe below. (The original posting is included at the end.)
First, the scsi error messages were a result of a bad SCSI cable. Most
had suggested an unterminated chain, or exceeding the SCSI cable or
device limit.
Second, the entry in the kernel was for an 8500 and NOT an 8505.
