My Original Posting:

Hello Sun Managers,
We are planning to upgrade our Sparcserver 490 to SPARCserver
600MP with Model 51 SuperSPARC CPU. We are running SunOS 4.1.2 on the
490 and it is primarily being used as a database server
(running Sybase).
According to my vendor, I will have to upgrade to SunOS 4.1.3 if
I want to upgrade the machine with Model 51 CPU. Is that true ? Also,
are
there some other points that I need to keep in mind for this upgrade ?
(Moving to Solaris 2.X is definitely not an option at this point.)
        Thanks and I will summarize.

Summary :

There were split responses on whether I need to run 4.1.3 on the
4/690 . I will have to reload the OS anyway since I will be moving the
machine from Sun4 to Sun4m architecture. Also, according to Hal Stern
"the cache code for the supsersparc chip (along with the trap tables and
other low level goodies) are in 4.1.3 and later releases only." So I
will be upgrading to SunOS 4.1.3 since this will also fix a lot of Sybase
problems.

Other points brought to my attention were -
. Some VME boards may not work under sun4m. I have to check with the vendor.
. A firmaware upgrade for the controller to use IPI disks is required.
. I might need patches for kernel performance and memory bugs after moving
  to 4.1.3.
. I will have to upgrade the Sybase server (current version is not
  supported on 4.1.3).

Some people mentioned moving to other machines or the newer machines
from Sun (Sparc 1000). While this would be nice, it is not an option at
this time since there is a lot inhouse software that cannot be ported or
moved from this machine.
