Both problems have been solved.

The SPARCWORKS problem is a known bug for which the solution
is to apply patch #100807-02.

The SPARCCompiler C++ problem was "user" error. The particular
machine I was working on was earlier set up for a technical
writer and had been installed for "End User System Support"
whereas it should have been installed as "Developer System
Support." The former version does not install /usr/ccs/bin
at all.

Thanks to all those who helped me solve this problem:

hushing@gdwest.gd.com
eckhard@ts.go.dlr.de
and Mike McMillan at Sun Microsystems, Cary, NC.
