As usual, a quick and deadly accurate response to my problem from the list.

>The Problem:

>sendmail is running in daemon mode. (/usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q1h).
>The system refuses a sendmail connection from itself (and only itself).

>/usr/lib/sendmail -v user@anyhost reports:
>Trying connected.
>220 Sendmail 4.1/SMI-4.1 ready at Fri, 9 Jul 93 17:50:15 EDT
>553 host name configuration error
The (quick and right) Solution from:
Pauline van Winsen - Uniq Professional Services <>
>Try turning off remote mode in /etc/ e.g.:
># Remote mode - send through server if mailbox directory is mounted
># OR
The Reason:
Pauline writes:
>If sendmail sees something other than a ufs directory for /var/spool/mail
>it assumes it's running in remote mode & automatically connects to
>'mailhost' which happens to be itself & the hostname config error results.

Thank you Pauline and the rest of you who may have responded but I have not yet received correct answers from. I suspect that this feature of sendmail may suprise a few others.
