The original question:

>I am having a problem with running dump to an exabyte. It was working
>up until two weeks ago. The day after it failed we lost a disk drive.
>Ever since the new drive has been installed the problem still exists.
>The particulars are below, has any one run into this.
>dump command:
> /usr/etc/dump 0fubs /dev/rst1 126 3169600 /files2
>the error:
> DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Fri Mar 26 02:59:01 1993
> DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
> DUMP: Dumping /dev/rsd2e (/files2) to /dev/rst1
> DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
> DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
> DUMP: estimated 538518 blocks (262.95MB) on 0.00 tape(s).
> DUMP: fopen on /dev/tty fails
> DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
>If I run the command from the command line it works however if I run
>it from cron it does not. Thankyou in advance for your help.

Summary to "fopen on /dev/tty fails"

>The fopen on /dev/tty is attempted whenever dump has a problem and needs to
>ask a y/n question. Something is causing an error when running from cron
>that does not occur when running from the command line. Look at other
>activities running at the same time and available swap as the two problems
>that we have seen the most often.

The dump did not fail at all from a shell at first but finally
did. The problem with the drive was a defective power cable. Thanks to
those who replied.
