Yesterday I wrote:

% I noticed that on my workstations (a SS10/30 and a IPX, both with SunOS 4.1.3
% and Openwindows 3.0) trying to start application Desktop Intro results in
% a series of messages like
% helpopen: starting new Viewer
% helpopen: No children
% helpopen: No children
% and so on. Eventually a core file is produced. I noticed that if I log as root
% the subshell starts ok, but if I su root (after allowing xhost access), and
% explicitly execute $OPENWINHOME/bin/helpopen handbooks/top.toc.handbook ,
% the problem appears again - so it should not be a simple permission goofing.
After a couple of messages whose suggestion unfortunately were not so useful,
I eventually managed to find the problem. It was the infamous LD_LIBRARY_PATH
environment variable, which was set as /usr/X11R5/lib:/usr/openwin/lib
- because I usually compile things with X11R5 and mistakenly thought that
upgrading to R5 did no harm. Switching searching order solved that problem
-- but now I have a lot of warnings about "old library revision" :-(

ciao! .mau.

ps: someone whose message I lost wrote a "me too". I hope the public summary is
ok for him too.
