On one subnet (defined as an ethernet attached to the second
ethernet controller of a Sun 3/160) I have all sparcs, running
4.1.1 and 4.1.3. On all of these systems, the id command works
fine but the whoami command says whoami: no login associated
with uid 4600. and rsh and rlogin don't work, asking "Who are
you?". I tried restarting ypserv (and ypbind) on the gateway
machine. Any ideas? We can't do a lot of useful work.

Thanks to the following people for trying to help.

None of you was right. It turned out that a power glitch caused the
slave server to go down and the passwd databases in /var/yp/domainname
were corrupt. This is what I call a computer error.
