Yes this is not a imaginary thing , it may happen to you

SUMMARY SOLUTION: Seems that patches may cure this problem but more likely
4.1.3 is a quick cure or start using Solaris2.X ... Any ways I need to
get 4.1.3 or Solaris 2.X from Sun ( We have Software Maint but to date
have only received 4.1.2 releases) I'll report further once I get at
least 4.1.3 installed

These files that are missing don't happen to be files that have been printed
do they? I seem to recall some problem with OW and deleting files that have
been 'drag and drop'ped, but I can't locate the reference at the moment.

There is a known bug where the file manager (OW 3.0) will trash a file
if it is dragged into a write protected directory, but other than that I
know of no such file loser which comes with the system. [The is a patch
for this problem, I don't recall the number offhand.]

It would be a good idea to install the NFS jumbo patches
on each of your systems. Patch numbers are:

100091-08/README:Synopsis: SunOS 4.0.3: NFS jumbo patch
100121-08/README:Synopsis: 4.1 NFS Jumbo Patch
100173-09/README:Synopsis: SunOS 4.1.1/4.1.2/4.1.3 : NFS Jumbo Patch
100483-02/README:Synopsis: Disk Suite/Backup Copilot: NFS Jumbo patch

Secondly there is a nasty bug in OW3 filemgr that can delete files. The
patch numbers required for this one are:

100452-20/README:Synopsis: OW 3.0: XView/3.0 CTE Jumbo Patch
100462-11/README:Synopsis: OpenWindows V3.0: File Manager CTE Jumbo Patch

>From thje README:
1073659 moving a file to a read-only folder will delete original file

I think there may be a bug in OW3 shipped with 4.1.2 or earlier. There
may be a patch. I will try to look into it and get back to you. I
have lost files. In fact, a few weeks ago, I was able to do it
consistently on a 4.1.2/OW3 system. Not with OW3 and 4.1.3. I don't
remember the exact scenario, but it had to do with selecting an object,
1 or 2 clicks, moving it a bit then releasing it. The file is still
there, but completely invisible. I don't know where it went. Not in
the wastebasket. It still occupies disk space. If I remember
correctly, fsck finds it and sticks it in lost+found.

A bit vague, but maybe it helps. Your users are not crazy..
