Hello again,

Here is my original question:

I received six responses. Thanks go out to:

danny@ews7.dseg.ti.com (?)
lf@gsc.ele.puc-rio.br (Luis Fernando V. Gomes)
frank@tardis.acs.ohio-state.edu (Frank G. Fiamingo)
cseb@frodo.lfi.uni-hannover.de (Christian Sebeke)
trdlnk!mike@uunet.UU.NET (Michael Sullivan)
jdavis@acenet.auburn.edu (Jonathan C. Davis) --->> BLUE RIBBON

Jonathan had the correct answer. He said that /usr/lib/sendmail was the mx
version rather than the subsidiary version, thus causing sendmail to get
confused when it tried to contact the mailhost. (The reason is beyond the
scope of this article, so the proof is left as an exercise for the reader.)

Many thanks to all who responded.

-- Richard
