SUMMARY: Serial Port droping DTR

Many thanks to all for the help. My original problem was the messages:

Aug 12 07:04:12 biersch getty: ioctl(TCGETS): Bad file number
Aug 12 07:04:12 biersch getty: ioctl(TCGETS): Operation not supported on socket
Aug 12 07:04:12 biersch getty: ioctl(TCGETS): Operation not supported on socket

In my syslog. And the result of that was that DTR was gone from the getty.
One could HUP the getty and it would restart fine. This is different from
and not fixed by the patch 10358-01 (from what I am told - I haven't tried
it yet). No one was quite sure why this happens but it is complicated by
some bugs in getty. This was also discussed back in January. Sorry I
only keep my sun-managers stuff for 4 months (I don't have THAT much
disk space). And Jay@princeton.edu sent me quite a lengthy copy of his
attempts to solve this problem. Robert@gar.no was the first to reply with
what turns out to be the only solution though it doesn't fix the bug it
keeps it from becoming a problem. That is to add the to#60 entry to
the gettytab entry corresponding to the line that has the problem. This will
force getty to timeout after 60 seconds and start a new one. In my case
the getty that got hung after a phone call would then go away and be
replaced by a good one. Problem sorta solved.

I also must appoligize for not including my machine type, os level and
which serial ports were the problem. As it turns out it wasn't relavent
but I did omit it by mistake.

Once again thanks all,
