SUMMARY: 4/670 and Ethernet

We were having a problem with our 4/670 and SBE/S card, where we weren't
getting any transmission of data onto the Ethernet.

The problem has been resolved, but BOY did we have a bad evening with Sun
support.

Sun's SSE figured that it was a down-rev mother board; we did have one of
the very first 4/670s, and that seemed reasonable. So, at the end of the
trading day, yesterday (4:30pm), we brought down our server for the 4th
time in 5 days. The FE moved all the hardware to the new motherboard and
put it into the 670. All the LEDs came on. We were furious; after all
this, they brought us a bad motherboard??

So we put the stuff back into the first motherboard (since the Sun office
had no other spares...), and would try other solutions. Unfortunately, the
old motherboard suddenly failed too! Same symptoms. It turned out to be a
newly failed CPU module. We replaced it, and put everything BACK into the
newer motherboard. Sure enough, the Ethernet board worked!! Turns out the
problem was the down-rev motherboard!

However, in the meantime, I discovered little things about the SBE/S board,
including documentation, and another goofy adapter cable. These might have
helped if we had gotten far enough to need them. Seems the Sun guys knew
nothing about the board, or its jumper.

Be all that as it may, our {LW}AN is complete. We can now communicate via
that 2nd card to London.

Thanks to all who offered their help...
