As several folks pointed out, this was due to a DEFINITION problem in
sendmail.cf. Specifically, the hostname choice (Dj). It should have
been Dj$m and I was using Dj$w.$m. The other problem, of course, was
that I was fixing sendmail.cf without rebooting the machine in between
each fix. So I got some really strange errors. Many thanks to:
