I was overwhelmed with responses !!
Many thanks to all those who responded (and to any not yet received !!) :-

The line:

config vmunix root on type nfs swap on sd0b

should have read

config vmunix root on type nfs swap on type spec sd0b
                                                                 ^^^^^^^^^

Some claimed this was undocumented others RTFM (I certainly can't find it
anywhere in the documentation !!)
