Well, thanks go out to Mike Rafferty for correctly identifying what I was
doing wrong. As it turns out, the problem was not with 4.1.2, but rather
with 4.1.1. The line referring to auto.home in the auto.master file should
be:

/home auto.home -rw,intr

Rather than the line I was using originally. For reasons which are known
only to Sun, the original line worked under 4.1.1 even though it should
not have according to the text of TFM.

Richard:

You have to have an auto.home file on the 4.1.2 system which
references the YP map. Simply add the entry on /etc/auto.home file as

+auto.home

I'm not sure this SHOULD have worked in 4.1.1 ... this:

/home /etc/auto.home -rw,intr

should probably be this:

/home auto.home -rw,intr

Because otherwise, with the leading slash, automount shouldn't even
be looking for an NIS map. This change should work on both 4.1.1 and
4.1.2, so nothing will break.

Please be sure to summarize back to the list; thanks.

You don't have enough fields in your password entry:

larry:<censored>:10:Larry Lai:/home/larry:/bin/csh
 ^user
        ^passwd
                  ^uid
^gid (or it should be!) something missing here.

Interesting. We have just hit something similar. We have two central
servers, one of which we upgraded to a SPARCserver MP670 and hence to SunOS
4.1.2). Other machines export to our servers, but we do not seem able
to mount from some of them onto the 670. We use the automounter, but as I
cannot even mount them "by hand", the automounter may (for once) be innocent.

(The ones we cannot mount onto 4.1.2 are from a different NIS domain,
but I can still mount from machines in the same domain and from yet another
domain. Might it be something with the DNS? The various NIS domains
in question have differing degrees of use of the DNS.)

This problem only came to light at the end of last week, and I haven't
yet had the opportunity to dig deeper.

Sorry I cannot be of more positive assistance.

Please summarise (or at least let me know of) any useful information
you receive.
