SUMMARY: problem with NIS map for mail.aliases

Well, I finally have a solution:

what I didn't mention in my original post is that I'm using Berkeley's
5.65 sendmail. apparently Sun's sendmail does something 'special' to
the database files that get made by NIS. changing the Makefile to use
Sun's version seems to work just great. Thanks to all who tried to help:
