Wow, talk about fast response. I sent the message this morning and
already have the answer.

Thanks goes to Don Deal <don@anzio.gatech.edu> (whose reply reached me
even before my question came back to me) and smb@ulysses.att.com, who
both gave me the answer.

My question was:

The answer was to remove the file "hamblin" from the directory
/etc/sm.bak and restart statd.
